Inspirational Quote: Debbie Ford

“Our shadows hold the essence of who we are.  They hold our most treasured gifts.  By facing these aspects of ourselves, we become free to experience our glorious totality:  the good and the bad, the dark and the light.  It is by embracing all of who we are that we earn the freedom to choose what we do in this world.  As long as we keep hiding, masqerading, and projecting [the negative messages we hide] inside us, we have no freedom to be and no freedom to choose.”

—Debbie Ford, The Dark Side of the Light Chasers: Reclaiming Your Power, Creativity, Brilliance, and Dreams, Riverhead Books/Penguin Putnam, New York, 1998. ISBN 15732-20965

We too often judge our strong qualities based on rules we’ve internalized from others: parents, friends, teachers, religion, etc.  This quote reminds us that what we think or believe is “dark” about ourselves, is often our own mistaken conclusion.  Like so much in life, it doesn’t matter what it is: it matters how you use it.  For example, anger is not bad in and of itself: its strength can be used to motivate you to change your life and create good things.  A gun or a hammer can be used to harm or to help.

Awakening means loving and appreciating and making friends with all facets of yourself.  It happens when you can embrace all of who you are.  Explore what you think is your “dark” side and see how you can understand it as a source of strength and help.  Read Debbie’s book for some great exercises!  (Find it on amazon.com now.)
